It doesn’t matter where you are in your career you’ll find that you can always benefit from having some help.  There are those around you that are willing to help take you under their wing and guide you along the way.  You simply need to ask someone to be your mentor.  You’ll be glad you did.

When I was first approached by a new employee about being a mentor, I have to admit, I was extremely flattered.  I took the request very seriously and a made sure the advice and guidance that I offered were solid and results driven.  The point is, I was approachable and humbled by the request.  There are many senior level managers, leaders, and executives who are more than willing to offer their time to help mentor an employee. They just simply need to be asked.  So, ask someone.   Today!

Why You  Need a Mentor

You don’t know it all. Sure, you can decide to navigate your career on your own, without the help of anyone.  And who knows, that may work for you.  But for most of us, it’s difficult maneuvering through the maze of corporate America and successfully growing a career.  There’s a lot of pitfalls and roadblocks along the way, and with the help of a mentor, you can avoid many of them.  With the right coach, the world is your oyster!

How to Find a Mentor in Your Organization

That’s simple.  Just look for someone you admire and aspire to be more like.  Make sure your prospect is a good, experienced, respected person, with a willingness to help others and a humble resolve.  You can simply do that by asking around.  Then invite that person to lunch, get to know him or her, and ask if she’ll be your mentor. Easy, right?   I know it may sound a bit intimidating, but you’ll find that it is easier than you think.

Mentors are important to your career.  They can help you identify opportunities in the organization, polish your image, strengthen your weak areas, build on your strengths, and give you a valuable business insights that will help you improve your results and overall contributions to your company.  You career will be well served it you include a mentor in your life.   Now that you finished reading this, get up from your desk and go find that perfect mentor for you.
