Coffee Break #2

I love the smell of football in the air!  It’s almost time ya’ll, for when our gridiron gladiators return to the arenas.   I can’t wait.   But, kick-off is still a bit aways, so until then, here’s some stuff to keep you amused.  Yes, another coffee break!

College Degrees Lose Some of Their Appeal

Seems like college degrees are no longer all the rage when it comes to employment.   Companies like Google and IBM are now considering candidates that have hands on experience with their particular expertise.

I always thought there was an over-reliance on people with degrees.  Companies often looked past uniquely qualified individuals without a degree for those folk with a degree.   I see this as great news and hope it will become a trend.   You can read the entire story here.

Apple May Bring Back Two Classics

Looks as though Apple may revive to of their classic devices, that users, including me, loved. This year we may see a newer, more powerful version of the Mac Mini.   Personally, I always thought that the Mac Mini was a good desktop entry into the Mac world.  While it didn’t come with the slick monitor and other peripherals, it was still a Mac and had (and I’m assuming still does) that wonderful performance.  Hook up a monitor, keyboard, and a mouse and you’re good to go.

I’d suggest you use that old PC as a media server and leave your real computing to the Mac Mini!   Besides the Mini, they are giving their Macbook Air a well-deserved makeover.  Just follow this link to find out.

Cross Functional Teamwork

Well, there’s either an oxymoron, typo or damn good idea.   Yes, team work across functions can work.   And according to the authors, it doesn’t have to be a project by project thing – when the project is over, everyone goes back to working in their own silo’s.   They propose that we work and think cross functionally, even when we are not working on a joint project.  It is an interesting read.

Food for Thought

Want to buy a restaurant in the Alps?  This iconic one is for sale.   Tequilla tips, as if you need any, right?   Cardiologists take all the fun out of eating ourselves to death.   Those crazy kids at MIT are going to make selfies even better.

That’s it for this coffee break.  See you next time.
