Make a Difference!

I spoke to a friend of mine today that I had not spoken to in awhile. It was one of those conversations where we were catching up to see how things were going.  He just recently was involved in a major career move and is in between jobs.  Not to fret though, he planned things carefully and is doing quite well financially.  In fact, if he wants to go back to work it will be because he needs something to do, not because he needs the money.

He is very well respected and is an excellent father, husband, business person and leader.  He possesses all the qualities that most companies would fight for in a senior level leader.  So really, when the dust settles from his recent career interruption, he can essentially name his price and he will get it.

But as I spoke to him about what he was going to do next he surprised me with his answer.  He told me that he would like to go work on a volunteer basis for an organization like the Red Cross.  When we hung up the phone, I thought about what he had said and smiled.  This friend, he never ceases to amaze me.  If anyone could throw corporate America aside without a second thought, he would be the person to do it.   And he is doing it for the right difference.  My friend will make a difference because he learned years ago that in life, we get what we give.

Do you want to make a difference?  Then now is the time.  No, you don’t have to walk off your job to volunteer.  You can make a difference right now, just the way that you are.  There are many organizations begging for both your time and yes, your money.  But don’t believe for one minute that your checkbook is more important than your time.  Because it’s not.  While organizations need money, what they need more of is your time.  We easily pull the checkbook out and donate financially.  But when someone is tugging for us to volunteer our time, well, we guard it very closely.

So go ahead, volunteer your time.  Right now.  Choose an agency and commit yourself to taking the first step to lift a helping hand.  You will make a difference.  Guaranteed!

Striving for Perfection

I am always tinkering with something, trying to make it a little better. Even when I think I have put what I feel is my best work, I always find ways to make it better. For instance, once again, I am updating the website, in an effort to provide more useful content to my visitors. I never stop.

I think it is a good thing to always improve, upgrade your efforts. Some people tell me that striving for perfection is the wrong thing to do. Well, most never reach perfection. But I don’t think that there is anything wrong with trying to achieve it. It makes us better. It helps us to recognize some of our shortcomings, oversights, and even mistakes and correct them. It also allows us to build a more comfortable and functional life. I see homeowners all the time upgrading their homes. Adding a deck here, a pool there, a study or a garden. We do it in all aspects of our lives.

Keep striving for perfection. You may be on a never ending journey, but one thing is for sure, you will never become bored with your travels, and through your efforts, you will probably make the world better for those who follow in your footsteps.
